Gerry Brown is a business book author writing about being an Independent Chairman/Director and corporate governance. He is also a regular speaker on the topic, for example on the Financial Times programmes and at Business Schools. He is a member of the Council of The University of Exeter and Chair of the Audit Committee as well as an Associate of Critical Eye. Gerry also mentors Chief Executives and was an elected member of the Berkshire County Council, where he served on the Education Committee and chaired several boards of school governors. He was educated at The Universities of Exeter and Reading and The London Business School.
Business
Gerry enjoyed a very diverse career as an Independent Chairman/Director of 11 different companies. These positions were at public, private equity and privately owned businesses across a wide range of different sectors including life-sciences, ports, construction, property, logistics, IT hardware & software and financial services in UK, USA, Europe and Asia.
The peak of his executive career was Operations Director of Exel plc (now DHL), then a Board member of TDG plc and Chairman of Europe for Tibbett and Britten plc. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics. Gerry is a Board Member of the Advisory Council on Governance at the IOD and Chairs the Stakeholder Governance group
Healthcare
Gerry chairs a global specialised Private Equity Fund focussed on life sciences based in the USA with over $3bn under management and is one of the largest of such funds. Additionally, he was an Independent Director of Quintiles the largest Clinical Research Organisation in the world and also chaired Biocompatibles PLC (a medical Devices company).
Philanthropy
He and his wife founded an outcomes based charitable trust to support Colombian students studying for higher education. He is a Visiting Fellow at Henley Business School and has funded research into governance in government and in the NHS, Universities, Charities and Sport. He is a supporter of The Leadership Institute of London Business School who are carrying out a research project into scandals in business. Gerry chairs the Fundraising Board at The University of Exeter which has, so far, raised over £60m.
Family
Gerry is married with five children and four grandchildren.
He chairs the family business G Brown Associates Ltd providing services in consulting, property, marketing, communications and event management.
